Artist Name: Leonardo Drew
Date of Birth: 1961
Drew has been making artwork since childhood, and first exhibited his work at the age of 13. He went on to attend the Parsons School of Design and received his BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and art in 1985.
Leonardo Drew is known for his dynamic large-scale sculptural installations.
His sculptures are instead made of "brand new stuff"—materials such as wood, rusted iron, cotton, paper, mud—that he intentionally subjects to processes of weathering, burning, oxidization, and decay.
Leonardo Drew, debuted in 2009 at the Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston and traveled to the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA.
Themes of memory, spirituality, entropy and nature.
I chose this artist because his work stuck out to me and it looked a lot different than the other artists.
I chose this piece because it really stood out. I really like the way it comes out of the wall and isn't just a normal design. I like how he chose to make it look different than other artists and I like how he used "brand new materials" like wood, rusted iron, cotton, paper, mud—that he intentionally subjects to processes of weathering, burning, oxidization, and decay.
